Adults exploring contemporary movement in a studio

ADULTS

Contemporary Smooth Flow

Adults · Beginner friendly

This is not a traditional ballroom class and it is not a conventional contemporary class.

It brings the two worlds together.

Each class starts on the floor with contemporary-based movement designed to release unnecessary tension, mobilise the body and bring awareness to breathing, weight and alignment.

We gradually move from the floor to standing and into the centre.

From there, we explore one social dance style.

Depending on the class, this may be:

Waltz · Tango · Foxtrot · Rumba · Cha Cha · Swing

We learn the character, rhythm and fundamental movement of that dance before combining it with our contemporary movement into a short piece of choreography.

Two styles. One body.

Contemporary dance and partner dance can look very different.

But both depend on many of the same things:

weight · balance · rhythm · intention · coordination · connection

By learning them together, dancers begin to understand where the styles meet — and where they are deliberately different.

One class might combine contemporary movement with Waltz.

Another may explore Rumba.

The following week we might continue developing the same dance or introduce something completely different.

You gradually build a vocabulary of different styles without needing to enrol in six separate classes.

CONTEMPORARY SMOOTH FLOW

What an adult class looks like

1 · ARRIVE IN YOUR BODY

We start on the floor.

Contemporary movement, mobility and breath help release tension and bring attention to the body before we begin dancing.

2 · FIND YOUR CENTRE

We move to standing and explore alignment, balance, weight transfer and coordination.

This is where Nevena's biomechanical approach becomes particularly important.

You begin to notice how you organise your body and how small changes can make movement feel easier and more natural.

3 · LEARN THE DANCE

We explore one dance style such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha or Swing.

Rather than rushing through steps, we look at its rhythm, character and movement quality.

4 · BRING THE WORLDS TOGETHER

Finally, contemporary movement and the dance style of the day come together in a short choreography.

You experience how one style can flow into another while learning to recognise what makes each of them distinct.

YOU DON'T NEED A PARTNER

Come alone or come together.

You are completely free to choose whether you want to dance with a partner.

If you come as a couple, you can explore the partnered elements together.

If you come alone and would like to experience partner work, Nevena can dance with you while teaching.

And if partner dancing simply isn't for you, that's absolutely fine.

Every class is designed so that the movement can also be explored individually.

Partner work is an option, never an obligation.

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

You do not need previous dance experience.

You don't need a partner.

You don't need to be flexible.

And you don't need to think of yourself as a dancer.

The class is for adults who want to move, learn something new and become more comfortable in their own body.

Some people come for dance.

Some come for movement.

Some come for music.

Some simply want an hour when they can stop thinking about everything else.

All are welcome.

BIOMECHANICAL AWARENESS

Understand how you move.

Nevena's approach pays particular attention to the mechanics of movement.

Where is your weight?

How are your feet connecting with the floor?

What happens through your pelvis and spine when you turn?

Are you using effort where you don't need it?

How does your posture change the way the rest of your body moves?

These ideas are introduced naturally throughout the class rather than taught as a lecture.

The goal is to help you develop a more intelligent relationship with your own movement.

And that awareness doesn't disappear when the class ends.

You may start noticing how you stand at your desk, how you walk, how you carry your shoulders or how you distribute your weight when you are simply waiting for the bus.

Dance becomes a way of understanding your body.
